BANGKOK, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Thailand provided on Monday 3 million baht (about 88,235 U.S. dollars) in grant-in-aid to Myanmar in joint efforts to help flood victims in the neighboring country.

Thailand's Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha handed out the money to Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand U Myo Myint Than, according to Deputy Government Spokesman Lt. Gen. Weerachon Sukhonthapatipak.

In addition, Thailand has provided food and relief items for flood victims in Myanmar's Bago division, Thaninthayi division, Mon state and Kayin state, he said.

Hundreds of thousands of Myanmar villagers have become homeless and vast areas of farmland considerably damaged due to severe flooding caused by weeks of heavy rains.

Meanwhile, in Thailand, authorities have alerted villagers in the northeastern and western provinces for imminent flooding as the volumes of water in Mekong River and dams have gradually increased due to heavy downpours.

Measures have been planned to evacuate villagers, livestock and property from low-lying areas in those provinces where severe flooding is very likely during rainy season.
