PARIS, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Two prison guards were wounded in an attack involving three inmates on Friday in Borgo jail on the French island of Corsica, a government official said.

It's the third such assault so far this month.

Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet denounced the "intolerable assault" and expressed "full support" with the injured officers.

Early on Friday, an inmate stabbed two jail officers when they were taking him to a solitary confinement before the two other detainees joined him, news channel BFMTV reported.

The attacker, who had been radicalized, wounded one in the throat and the other in the head. Their situation was not critical, according to the report.

The attack came amid a prison officers' strike action movement which entered its fifth day. Scores of French prisons remained blocked on Friday as guards protest unsecure working condition.

The strikes were sparked after a detainee, a member of al-Qaida terrorist cell, wounded three officers with a pair of scissors and a razor blade at the Vendin-le-Vieil prison in northern France.

Penitentiary staff suffered between 4,000 and 5,000 physical assaults per year, according to union figures.

Admitting a "disgraceful, unacceptable capacity rate of 139 percent" in French jails, President Emmanuel Macron asked for "a comprehensive penitentiary plan" before the end of February.
