UNITED NATIONS, July 12 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday vowed to carry on work to tackle sexual harassment system-wide.

"I am determined to do all we can to tackle sexual harassment -- at the Secretariat and system-wide in the United Nations," he told a news conference at UN Headquarters.

He showcased several measures against sexual harassment at the UN Secretariat, including the creation of a specialized team of investigators, the practice of fast-tracking and streamlining procedures for receiving, processing and addressing complaints, a 24-hour "Speak Up" confidential hotline, a revamp of mandatory training on sexual harassment.

He said he had encouraged agencies that are not under his direct control to adopt similar measures.

"I am absolutely committed to this effort. Zero tolerance in words must mean zero tolerance in deeds," said Guterres.

He said the scourge of sexual harassment is deeply rooted in historic power imbalances, emphasizing the need of gender parity. "We live in a male-dominated world with a male-dominated culture. This is one reason why ensuring gender parity and the empowerment of women and girls is central."
