JOHANNESBURG, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The upcoming BRICS summit have attracted more than 1,100 media across the world, a South African government official said on Thursday.

The spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), Nelson Kgwete, said this on Thursday while addressing the media in Johannesburg.

"We have processed over 1,100 media accreditation applications with the majority coming from China, South Africa, Russia, India and Brazil. Non BRICS media have also featured," said Kgwete.

He stated that they have also approved some applications from some researchers who asked to attend the BRICS summit and be analysts for certain media houses.

Kgwete also clarified that there are certain media houses who are part of the presidential delegations who will have access to some places where some media houses cannot go.

He said only the accredited media house will be allowed to the BRICS summit.

"It is a serious offence to exchange cards amongst colleagues. We have seen it in the past and handed them to the police," he said.

Kgwete said local and international media have shown interest in the summit.

BRICS, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is scheduled to hold its 10th annual summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on July 25-27.
