BUDAPEST, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snowfalls in Hungary have disrupted or even paralyzed air and road traffic, according to official sources here on Tuesday.

Many flights were delayed at the Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, as both runways of the airport were under layers of snow.

"Runway number two is closed because of the snow, and Runway number one is currently being cleaned by the snowplows," said Mihaly Hardy, press officer of the airport, in a statement.

Delays are expected to be over in the evening, when snowfall should come to an end. Several flights bound for Budapest had to make landings in neighboring countries such as Slovakia or Austria.

Some bus lines serving the hilly Buda side of the Hungarian capital were temporarily suspended, and traffic was very slow on all motorways in Hungary.

Although the number of accidents has significantly increased, authorities have not yet released reports of casualties due to the heavy snowfall.

Hungarian police issued a warning, asking the population to stay at home if possible and use extreme caution when driving.

Snowfall is expected to stop in the evening, but authorities have already warned of freezing rain and sleet in most parts of the country for Wednesday.
