COLOMBO, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet of ministers, on Wednesday approved a proposal to appoint a five member ministerial committee to resolve the ongoing electricity crisis in the island country.

The committee, headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, will present recommendations on the short-term, mid-term and long-term measures on resolving the crisis.

Sri Lanka has been facing daily power cuts in recent weeks with the Ceylon Electricity Board imposing power cuts for three hours during the day and one hour during the night.

The island is divided into three groups, with each group facing power outages in different time slots.

The Power and Energy Ministry said the power cuts were due to the severe dry weather prevailing across the country which had led to a drastic decrease in the water levels in all major reservoirs.

Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake assured that the power cuts would end from April 11, as the government is taking urgent steps to add more mega watts to the national grid.
