NEW YORK, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese character pronounced as "he" in the pinyin syllable, meaning cooperation, won the 2019 character for China at an annual Chinese character awards ceremony held here on Friday.

At the event, "dui," meaning confrontation, was chosen for the United States, while "bao," meaning violence, was given to the world for the passing year.

Chen Ge, president of Global Cloud Media Corporation in New York City and an organizer of the event, said voters that participated in the activity online, mostly young American-born Chinese (ABC), are "very sharp in their choice for the characters to describe the year for China, the United States and the world."

Ge said the event aims to encourage ABCs to have a better understanding of the culture and language of their motherland, and urge young generations to better merge into the U.S. society and contribute to building a better future for all.

The Annual Chinese Character awards in North America, in the fourth year, were co-organized by news website NewsDH.com and Global Cloud Media Corporation at Flushing, New York.
